Trooper Shot 9 Times Testifies In Trial
A Missouri trooper who was shot numerous times during a traffic stop in May 2005 took the stand on Wednesday, testifying against his accused shooter. Jackson County prosecutors said Tommy Rollins, 28, of Grandview, shot Trooper Brandon Brashear at least nine times following a traffic stop in Interstate 470 in Lee's Summit. Rollins faces charges of assault on a law enforcement officer, assault, armed criminal action and possession of an unlawful weapon. Brashear testified that he pulled over a white Monte Carlo for traffic violations in the early-morning hours on May 28, 2005. There was a chase on I-470, and then the suspect stopped again. As Brashear got out of his vehicle, the suspect got out of his, firing shots. Brashear got off one shot, but he was hit with a barrage of bullets; investigators said it was at least a dozen shots. Brashear said he screamed, "Enough," to the suspect, and tried to get away by crawling into the grass along the freeway. He said the gunman came over to him, fired two execution-style shots and then left. Throughout the ordeal, Brashear said he remained awake and in pain. He said he thought he was going to die, but he wanted to talk to somebody first. A doctor testified that he counted 17 entrance and exit wounds in Brashear's body. He called the fact that Brashear lived "a miracle." Investigators said Rollins had been on his way to harm a former employer who had fired him.
